DafeApp vs CloudPepper

Both manage self-hosted Odoo on a server you own, and both are far cheaper than Odoo.sh. They differ in what happens on the bad days — when a backup has to restore, a certificate has to issue on a domain you do not control, or two maintenance jobs collide.

What they have in common

Your own VPS, root access, Odoo Community or Enterprise, Git add-ons, custom domains with automatic TLS, and a panel instead of a terminal. If you are choosing between these two and Odoo.sh, either will save you most of the money. CloudPepper is a capable product and cheap, and for a single site that is looked after by someone technical it may be all you need.

Where DafeApp differs

Backups that are checked, not assumed

A PostgreSQL dump that was cut off mid-write still looks like a file of the right shape. DafeApp verifies the dump reached its completion marker and refuses a truncated one rather than restoring half a database and reporting success.

Database-only backups

The filestore is usually most of the weight — commonly 800 MB of an 830 MB backup. Database-only copies are a few percent of the size, so the same storage buys months of restore points instead of a week.

Certificates without DNS access

Panels that validate domains through a DNS API can only issue certificates for zones they can edit. DafeApp validates over the TLS handshake, so a domain at any registrar works with nothing but an A record.

Several Odoo versions per server

Odoo 17, 18 and 19 side by side on one machine — so a migration can run with the old version still reachable until the new one is signed off.

Before you migrate anything, test the export

This is the one piece of advice worth more than the rest of the page, and it applies whichever platform you move to. An export can be damaged in two independent ways, and neither announces itself:

A truncated SQL dump. It restores, the site starts, and the tables that come late in the alphabet are empty. Check that the file ends with PostgreSQL database dump complete — if that line is missing, the export was cut short. An incomplete filestore. The database can be perfect while a fraction of the attachments are absent. Compare the number of files in the archive against the attachment rows in the dump; a real export we handled was missing 1,058 files, including several hundred invoice PDFs, and nothing in the restore flagged it.

Frequently asked

How do I migrate from CloudPepper to DafeApp?

Export a backup from CloudPepper and upload the ZIP. DafeApp restores the database and filestore onto your server, reconnects your Git add-ons and issues the TLS certificate for your domain.

Will my CloudPepper backup restore cleanly?

Usually — but check it before you rely on it. DafeApp verifies that the SQL dump reaches its completion marker and refuses a truncated one rather than restoring half a database. Verify the filestore too: an export can carry a complete dump and an incomplete set of attachments, which only shows up later as missing documents.

Can I keep my custom add-ons?

Yes. Connect the Git repository holding them and DafeApp clones it onto the instance, tracks the branch, and can update the site when you push.

Do I have to move my domain's DNS?

No. Leave DNS wherever it is — your registrar, Cloudflare, anywhere. Point an A record at your server and the certificate is issued over the TLS handshake, so DafeApp never needs access to your DNS provider.

Bring a database across and see

Restore an existing backup into a fresh instance without touching your live site. If it comes up clean, switch the DNS. If it does not, you have learned something important about your backups for free.
